Since 2010, the APN Assembly has been held biennially across different African countries. We believe in the principles of inclusivity, solidarity, and global collaboration by enriching the experience for our members, which amplifies the power of the assembly, and contributes to the overall relevance of the APN’s mission.
The Inaugural APN assembly held in Nairobi in November 2010, saw over 200 participants representing African grantmaking organizations and partners from other parts of the world converge to set the agenda for African philanthropy. It created a platform to further conversations around the community in Africa and the shape and character of African Philanthropy. See report (click here)
The 2nd bi- annual assembly of the APN was held in October and November 2012, in Johannesburg, South Africa, under the theme ‘Growing African Philanthropy: What’s New, What’s Now, What’s Next’? It attracted well over 300 participants from more than 25 countries, shaped by the appreciation of the need to grow and respond to the development challenges of the African continent.
The postponed 2014 Biennial Assembly was held in Arusha, Tanzania on 1st – 3rd July 2015 under the theme ‘Philanthropy in Africa 2015 People, Policy and Practice.’ At its conclusion, the membership elected to change the name of the organization to the Africa Philanthropy Network.
The fourth Assembly was held from the 8th to 9th November 2018, in Port Louis Mauritius under the theme African Philanthropy: Giving and Power. The Pillars that were covered included: People, Policies and Practice. https://africaphilanthropynetwork.org/gallery/apn-assembly-2018/
The fifth Assembly in 2022 was co-hosted by the East Africa Philanthropy Network (EAPN), CivSource, and Uganda National NGO Forum (UNNGOF). The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted plans for the in-person 2020 Assembly, which was to be co-hosted by WINGS Forum, in Nairobi, Kenya, and which instead took place online. For 2022, the theme for the Assembly ‘African philanthropy: Driving Change’, was an opportunity for participants from more than 24 African nations (and including Canada, Belgium, Brazil, the Netherlands, and the UK), to take stock and reflect on the journey African philanthropy has taken over the years, and to be purposeful and strategic in thinking about what role it should and can play in addressing many of the critical issues of our time. 2022 APN Assembly pictures can be accessed here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Z3fYvbgyhXwQ4PZVX3gPs3B5X0M34QmU?usp=sharing
